Bailey, Joseph

soldier, was born April 28, 1827, in Salem, Ohio. When the civil war broke out he entered the federal army as captain of the fourth Wisconsin infantry. He accompanied the army in the Red river campaign, and it was during this expedition that Bailey achieved the remarkable engineering feat which made him one of the heroes of the war.

He received the brevet of brigadier-general on June 7 and was promoted colonel on June 30, 1864. He died March 21, 1867.
