Bailey, Gilbert Stephen

clergyman, author, was born Oct. 17, 1822, in Dalton, Pa. After graduating from the Oberlin college, Ohio, he started a select school at Waverly, which soon grew into Madison academy, with one hundred students. He subsequently resigned this charge and was ordained to the ministry; and later filled a pastorate in Pomona, Cal. Besides numerous tracts and uncollected poems he has published a History of the Illinois River Baptist Association; Caverns of Kentucky; Manual of Baptism; The Trials and Victories of Religious Liberty in America; Three Discourses on the History, Wonders, and Excellence of the Bible; The Word and Works of God; Prize Discourse on Slander; and Ingersollism Exposed.
