Arnold, Lemuel H

merchant, congressman, governor, was born Jan. 29, 1792, in St. Johnsbury, Vt. He was removed to Rhode Island at an early age; graduated at Dartmouth college, in 1811; and was educated for the bar, but turned his attention to mercantile pursuits. In 1831 was elected governor of Rhode Island, and re-elected in 1832; was a member of the governor's council during the Dorr rebellion in 1842; and a representative in congress from 1845 to 1847. He died June 27, 1852, in Kingston, R. I.
