Alden, Timothy (Inventor of a machine)

inventor of a machine for setting and distributing type, was born in 1819 in Barnstable, Mass. He was sixth in descent from John Alden, the Mayflower Pilgrim. When very young and a compositor in his brother's print- If I live I will invent ing office he said: a machine to do this tiresome work. He steadily pursued this object, and after twenty years' labor accomplished it. It was improved after his death by Henry W. Alden. He died Dec. 4, 1858, in New York.
