Allen, William (Lawyer congressman United)

lawyer, congressman, United States senator, governor of Ohio, was born in 1806 in Edenton, N. C.

He received a good education; was connected by family ties with Allen G. Thurman; was an early emigrant to the state of Ohio; and adopted the profession of the law. He was a representa tive in congress from Ohio from 1833 to 1835; was elected a senator in congress from 1837 to 1849; and in 1874 became governor of Ohio, serving as such until 1876. He refused to accept any office except such as was conferred upon him by an election of the people. He died July 11, 1879.
