Aikin, William
governor of South Carolina, was born in 1806 in Charleston, S. C. He graduated at the South Carolina college in 1825; was a member of the state legislature in 1838, 1840, and 1842; was governor of South Carolina in 1844; and a representative in congress from that state from 1851 to 1857. He was considered one of the most successful riceplanters in his native state, and was one of the leading men of his state who did not take part in the rebellion. He was also noted for his liberality, benevolence, and culture as a scholar.
