Ashmun, George
lawyer, congressman, was born Dec. 25, 1804, in Blandford, Mass. He graduated at Yale college in 1823; studied law, and settled in Springfield in 1828; served in the state legislature during the years 1833, 1835, 1836, 1838, and 1841, officiating as speaker of the house in the latter year. He was a representative in congress from 1845 to 1851. In 1860 he was president of the Chicago convention; and in 1866 was chosen a delegate to the Philadelphia National Union convention. He died July 17, 1870, in Springfield, Mass.
