Atwater, Caleb
lawyer, legislator, author, was born Dec. 25, 1778, in North Adams, Mass. He was graduated at Williams college in 1804; studied law, and became a successful practitioner. He moved to Ohio in 1811, where for some years he was a member of the state legislature and postmaster of Circleville. He was also Indian commissioner under Jackson. He published A Tour to Prairie du Chien; Western Antiquities; Writings of Caleb Atwater; History of Ohio; and an Essay on Education. He died March 13, 1867, in Circleville, Ohio.
