Worden, John Lorimer

naval officer, was born March 12, 1818, in Westchester county, N. Y. He was commander of the Yankee cheese box, the Monitor, in her famous fight with the iron-clad Merrimac, March 9, 1862, the first battle between iron-clad ships in the world's history. He was commissioned rear-admiral in 1872; was commander-in-chief of the European squadron from 1875- 77; then served as a member of the examining board and president of the retiring board until 1886, when, his health failing, he retired with the highest seapay of his grade. He died in 1886.
