Wool, John Ellis
soldier, was born Feb. 20, 1784, in Newburg, N. Y. He served in the war of 1812; in 1841 was appointed a brigadiergeneral in the United States army, and for services in the Mexican war he was, brevetted major-general. He was retired in 1863, being long past the age for active service. He was, especially eminent in the organizing and discipline of troops. A ment seventy-five feet high has been erected to his memory in Troy, N. Y. He died Nov. 10, 1869, in Troy, N. Y. monu-
