Winthrop, Robert Charles

lawyer, state legislator, congressman, United States senator, was born May 12, 1809, in Boston, Mass. He entered the legislature of Massachusetts in 1835; and was speaker of the house from 1838 to 1840.

He was a member of the United States house of representatives from 1840 to 1842, and continued in that body until 1850; was speaker during the congress commencing in 1847. He was appointed to the senate of the United States to fill a vacancy, and served from 1850 to 1851. He was the author of Addresses and Speeches; a Life of Governor John Winthrop; and Memoirs of Henry Clay, Washington, Bowdoin, and Franklin. He died in 1894.
