Williams, Betsey
philanthropist, was born in 1789 in Cranston, R. I. She inherited a farm of one hundred acres, by direct succession through five generations, from Roger Williams, and bequeathed it to the city of Providence to form the park that bears his name. She died Nov. 27, 1871, in Cranston, R. I. He was a Providence journalist, editor of The Journal; and the author of The Poets and Poetry of Ireland; Studies in Folk-Song and Popular Poetry; and Sam Houston and the War of Independence in Texas. He died in 1896.
