Whiteaker, John
lawyer, jurist, state senator, governor, was born May 4, 1820, in Dearborn county, Ind. He was elected a judge of probate in 1855; a representative in the territorial legislature in 1857; and governor of the new state of Oregon in 1858, holding that office until 1862. He was elected a representative in the state legislature in 1866; re-elected in 1868, and was made speaker; and again re-elected in 1870. In 1876 he was elected state senator for four years; and was president of the senate in 1876 and 1878.
He was elected a representative from Oregon to the forty-sixth congress.
