White, Octavius Augustus

physician, author, was born Feb. 8, 1826, in Charleston. He first introduced the practice of superficial incisions within the os uteri for the relief of stenotic dysmenorrhœa. He also invented the hysterotome, an instrument for practicing safe incision within the neck of the womb; also novel instruments for the cure of hernia and varicocele, and a new form of laryngoscope. He is the author of Report on the Yellow Fever Epidemic of Wilmington, N. C.; Varicocele and Its Radical Cure; Report on the Yellow Fever Epidemic in Savannah, Ga.
