educator, college president, was born Nov. 1, Nov. 1, 1857, in York, Pa. He accepted the call to become president of Trinity college, Trinity college, North Carolina, and still occupies that position with the chair of political and social science.

Heller, Daniel D

lawyer, jurist, was born March 29, 1839, in Harrison county, Ohio. He was elected judge of the twenty-sixth judicial circuit court of Incourt of Indiana, and received the re-election for a second term of six years.

Helm, Ben Hardin

soldier, state legislator, was born in 1830 in Elizabethtown, Ky. He was a member of the Kenof the Kentucky legislature in 1855-56, and commonwealth attorney for the third district of Kentucky from 1856 till 1858. In 1861 he joined the confederate army, and was made brigadier-general in 1862. He died Sept. 21, 1863, in Georgia.

Helman, Charles Edward

clergyman, lecturer, was born Jan. 24, 1862, in Red Haw, Ohio. He graduated from the Baldwin university of Berea, Ohio, Berea, Ohio, from which institution he received the dereceived the degree of A. B. He has attained eminence as a successful clergyman of the methodthe methodist episcopal church; has filled several pastorates in Ohio; and now fills a pasfills a pastorate in his church at Hailey, Idaho.

Helmick, William

lawyer, congressman, was born Sept. 6, 1817, in Jef- , in Jefferson county, Ohio. He was elected a prosecuting attorney; and in 1858 was elected a representative from Ohio to the thirty-sixth congress.

Helms, Eugene W

lawyer, jurist, was born April 2, 1859, in Salem, Wis.

He received his education in the common schools and graduated from the law school of the state university of Wisconsin.

In 1893-96 he was district attorney of St. of St. Croix county, Wis.; and from Jan. he commenced serving as circuit judge of the eighth judicial circuit of Wisconsin.

He is a surgeon of New York city; and the author of Treatise on Diphtheria; Medical cal Pomposity; System of Surgery; of a Surgeon; Suprapubic Lithotomy; and With the Pousse Café, postverses.

Helper, Hinton Rowan

author, was born Dec. 27, 1829, near Mocksville, N. C.

He is a southern writer long resident in New York city; and the author of The Impending Crisis of the South, a 'once famous work, which appeared shortly before the fore the opening of the civil war; No- ; The Negroes in Negroland; The Land of Gold; Oddments of Andean Diplomacy; and the Three Americas Railway.

Hembel, William

He practiced gratuitously for many years among the poor of Philadelphia, and was noted for benevolence. He was president of the Academy of Natural Sciences from 1840 till 1849. He died June 19, 1851, in Philadelphia, Pa.
