Whitcomb, James
lawyer, United States senator, governor, was born Dec. 1, 1795, in Windsor, Vt. In 1826 he was appointed prosecuting attorney at Bloomington, Ind.; and in 1830 was chosen a member of the state senate, and served five years. He was appointed commissioner of the general land office in 1836; and in 1841 returned to the practice of his profession at Terre Haute, Ind. In 1843 he was chosen governor of the state; and was re-elected in 1846. In 1849 he was elected a senator of the United States for the term ending in 1855. He died Oct. 4, 1852, in New York city.
