Wells, Jefferson Madison

farmer, public official, was born Jan. 7, 1808, in Rapides, La. He received the rudiments of his education in Bardstown, Ky.; and at Captain Partridge's Military academy, Conn. He served with distinction as governor and surveyor of the port of New Orleans under President Grant. He was president of the returning board that elected R. B. Hayes president of the United States. He is a successful farmer of Lecompte, La.; and has been a power in the public and political affairs of Louisiana.
