Varnum, James Mitchell

soldier, lawyer, jurist, state legislator, congressman, was born Dec. 17, 1748, in Dracut, Mass. In 1774 he accepted the command of a company called the Kentish guards; and in 1777 was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general. In 1779 he resigned his commission in the army, and the legislature appointed him major-general of militia. From 1780 to 1782 he was a delegate to the continental congress. In 1786 he was again a delegate to congress, and served one year; and was then appointed judge of the Northwest territory. He died Jan. 10, 1789, in Marietta, Ohio.
