Tupper, Henry Martyn

educator, missionary, was born April 11, 1831, in Monson, Mass. In 1859 he graduated from Amherst college, and three years later from the Newton Theological seminary.

He served in the union army during the civil war chiefly in Virginia and Mississippi, fighting many battles and doing much chaplain work. After the war he became a missionary of the American Baptist Home Missionary society; began work among the colored people at Raleigh, N. C., and laid the basis of the Shaw university.
