Tufts, Arthur Webster

merchant, state senator, was born Feb. 20, 1828, in Charlestown, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts legislature in 1879, 1880 and 1881, and of the senate in 1882 and 1883. In politics he was originally a whig, and in 1860 joined the republican party, becoming presidential elector in 1884, and, in 1888, delegate to the Chicago convention which nominated Benjamin Harrison. In 1889 he accepted appointment to the governor's council, serving three years. He was director in various corporations, including the Commonwealth Insurance company of Boston, and the Warren Institution for Savings in Charlestown, and was president of the Institution for Savings in Roxbury.
