Townsend, Hosea
soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born June 16, 1840, in Greenwich, Ohio. He enlisted in the second Ohio cavalry in 1861; and was promoted to lieutenant, and resigned in 1863 on account of disability. He was admitted to the bar at Cleveland, Ohio, and commenced the practice of law in Memphis, Tenn., in 1865. He was elected to the legislature of that state in 1869 as a republican, and served one term. He removed to Colorado in 1879; was elected to the fifty-first congress, and re-elected to the fifty-second congress as a republican. In 1897 he was appointed judge of the United States supreme court for the southern district of the Indian territory.
