Summers, George W

lawyer, jurist, state legislator, congressman, was born near Alexandria, Va. In 1830 he was electea a member of the house of delegates, and continued to represent Kanawha county in the legislature for several years. He was elected to the national house of representatives in 1841, and re-elected in 1843, serving throughout the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth con- In 1851 he was unanimously gresses. nominated as the whig candidate for governor at the first election of the governor by the people. In 1852 he was elected judge of the eighteenth judicial circuit in Virginia, and served in that capacity for six years. He was a delegate to the peace congress of 1861.
