He thorough education in the country schools; and during the civil war commanded a regiment of infantry in the confederate army, and served four years in the army of Northern Virginia.

During 1870-1876 he served as a state senator in the Mississippi legislature. During 1876-1881 he served with distinction as governor of the state of Mississippi; and during 1890-96 again filled the high office of governor to the satisfaction of the people of that state.

In 1884-85 he was railroad commissioner.
