Stillman, Thomas Bliss

civil engineer, banker, inventor, was born Aug. 30, 1806, in Westerly, R. I. During the civil war he was United States inspector of steam vessels for the New York district, and superintendent of construction of revenue cutters. For nearly twenty years he was a trustee of the New York hospital, and he was long president of the Metropolitan Savings bank. He invented improved forms of machinery that have come into use. He died Jan. 1, 1866, in Plainfield, N. J.
