Stevenson, John White

lawyer, state legislator, congressman, was born May 4, 1812, in Richmond, Va. He was elected to the Kentucky legislature in 1845, 1846, and 1847. He was one of the three commissioners appointed to revise the civil and criminal code of Kentucky.

He was elected a representative to the thirty-fifth congress from that state; and was re-elected to the thirty-sixth congress. In 1867 he was elected lieutenantgovernor of Kentucky, and acted as governor. In 1871 he entered the United States senate for the term ending in 1877.

He died Aug. 10, 1886, in Covington, Ky.

STEVENSON, SARAH HACKETT, physician, author, was born Feb. 2, 1843, in Buffalo Grove, Ill. In 1876 she was a delegate from the Illinois State Medical society to the American Medical association at Philadelphia, and was the first woman physician to be elected a member of that body. She was one of the promoters of the Home for Incurables and Training School for Nurses in Chicago, and outside of her large practice has found time to publish works on Biology, in two volumes; and Physiology.
