Speight, Jesse

state legislator, congressman, United States senator, was born Sept. 22, 1795, in Greene county, N. C.

In 1822 he was a member of the house of commons of North Carolina; and in 1823 was a member of the state senate, where he continued until 1827, officiating several years as speaker. He was a representative in congress from North Carolina from 1829 to 1837. He moved to Mississippi; and was elected to the legislature there, and made speaker. From 1845 to 1847 he was a senator in congress from his adopted state. He died May 1, 1847, in Columbus, Miss.
