Southard, Samuel Lewis

lawyer, United States senator, governor, was born June 9, 1787, in Baskinridge, N. J. In 1815 he was elected to the New Jersey legislature, and in a week after taking his seat was placed on the bench of the supreme court of New Jersey. In 1820 he was a presidential elector; and in 1821 was elected a senator in congress. In 1823 he was appointed secretary of the navy.

In 1830 he was elected attorney-general of New Jersey; and in 1832 was governor of the state. In 1833 he was again elected to the United States senate, and served until 1842; and on the death of President Harrison became the president of the senate. He died June 26, 1842, in Fredericksburg, Va.
