Sorin, Edward

clergyman, was born in 1814 in France. He was the first president of Notre Dame college, and continued in office until One of its 1865. beautiful halls which is adorned with a life-sized portrait of Washington was named and dedicated in his honor by Father Sorin, and Washington's birthday is always a gala day at Notre Dame.

The Ave Maria, a widely known religious journal, was started by Father Sorin, who was its editor for a number of years; and he has contributed extensively to catholic publications.
