Smith, John (Congressman United States)
congressman, United States senator, was born Feb. 12, 1752, near Brookhaven, N. Y. He was a general of militia in New York. He was a member of the state legislature from 1784 to 1799; and was a member of the convention which adopted the constitution. He was a representative in congress from New York from 1799 to 1804. From 1804 to 1813 he was a senator in congress, and in the latter year was appointed United States marshal for New York.
