Smith, Israel
lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born April 4, 1759, in Suöeld, Conn. He was sent to the Vermont state legislature from Rutland, and was a representative in congress from 1791 to 1797, and again in 1800. He was appointed chief justice of the supreme court of Vermont in 1797. He was a senator in congress during the years 1801 and 1802, and from 1803 to 1807, when he resigned. He was governor of Vermont in 1807. He died Dec. 2, 1810, in Rutland, Vt.
