Smith, Green Clay
soldier, clergyman, congressman, was born July 2, 1830, in Richmond, Ky. He was a school commissioner from 1853 to 1857, establishing a great number of schools. He served as second lieutenant in the Mexican war, and after the breaking out of the rebellion in 1861 had command of the fourth Kentucky cavalry. He was elected to the state legislature; was appointed a brigadier-general in 1862; was subsequently promoted to the rank of majorgeneral; and was present at the battle of Ball's Bluff and about fifty other engagements. In 1863 he was elected a representative from Kentucky to the thirtyeighth congress, and was re-elected to the thirty-ninth congress. In 1866, while still in congress he was appointed governor of Montana. He subsequently became a preacher in the baptist church in Frankfort, Ky. In 1876 he was the candidate of the prohibition party for the presidency of the United States.
