Smart, James Henry
educator, author, college president, was born Jan. 30, 1841, in Center Harbor, N. H. For thirty years he has been a member of the state board of education of Fort Wayne, Ind.; was thrice elected state superintendent of public instruction; and became president of Purdue university in 1883. He is the author of The Indiana Schools and the Men who Work in Them; a History of Institutes in the United States; and a series of valuable Indiana state educational reports.
