lawyer, planter, congressman, was born March 15, 1823, in Monticello, Ga. He was elected a representative from Alabama to the thirtyfourth and thirty-fifth congresses. SHORTER, JAMES ALEXANDER, bishop, was born Feb. 4, 1817, in Washington, D. C. He was elected bishop of the African-American methodist episcopal church in 1868, and sent more fully to organize the church in the extreme southwest, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. As president of the Missionary society of his church, he has succeeded in opening the work in Hayti and Africa, whither missionaries have been sent.
