Sherwood, Isaac R

soldier, journalist, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Aug. 14, 1835, in Stanford, N. Y. He established the Williams county Gazette of Bryan, Ohio; and in 1859 was elected probate judge of Williams county, which position he resigned to enter the army in 1861. He was commissioned major in 1863; was promoted to lieuten ant-colonel in 1864; and commanded his regiment to the close of the war, receiving a brevet of brigadier-general for gallant and meritorious services. He edited the Toledo Commercial, and was an editorial writer on the Cleveland Leader. He was elected secretary of state for Ohio in 1868; and re-elected in 1870. He was elected a representative from Ohio to the fortythird congress as a republican. He is the author of a volume entitled Army Grayback, a book of humorous verse.
