Sheldon, Lionel Allen
soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor, was born Aug. 30, 1829, in Otsego, N. Y.
He served one term as judge of probate in Lorain county, Ohio. In 1861 he entered the volunteer army as a captain; was soon promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel; and at the close of the war was brevetted a brigadier-general. He subsequently settled in New Orleans, La., and devoted himself to his profession. In 1868 he was elected a representative from Louisiana to the forty-first congress; and was re-elected to the forty-second and forty-third congresses. In 1881 he was appointed governor of the territory of New Mexico.
