Scott, Thomas Alexander

soldier, railroad president, was born Dec. 28, 1824, in London, Pa. He was commissioned colonel of the District of Columbia volunteers; a few weeks later was appointed in charge of all government railways and telegraphs.

In 1861 he was appointed assistant secretary of war, and in 1863 became colonel and assistant quartermaster on the staff of General Hooker. During 1871-72 he was president of the Union Pacific Railway company; in 1872 was elected president of the Texas Pacific Railway company; and in 1873 was elected president of the Atlantic and Pacific Railway company. In 1874 he was elected president of the Pennsylvania Railroad company. He died May 21, 1881, in Darby, Pa.
