Sanford, Edward
journalist, state senator, poet, was born July 8, 1805, in Albany, N. Y. In 1838 he was made assistant naval officer at the port of New York, and also held the office of secretary to the commission to restore the duties on goods that had been destroyed by the great fire of 1835. In 1843 he was elected to the state senate. Among his bestknown compositions, only a few of which appeared over his own name, are a poetical address to Black Hawk; and The Loves of the Shell-Fishes. He died Aug. 28, 1876, in Gowanda, N. Y.
