Rusk, Thomas Jefferson

soldier, lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born Aug. 8, 1802, in Camden, S. C.

He served as a member of the house of representatives and as chief justice of the supreme court, which last office he resigned early in 1842. In 1845 he was president of the convention that consummated the annexation of Texas to the United States. Upon the admission of Texas into the Union in 1845 he was elected one of the senators in the congress of the United States, in which office he served two terms and was re-elected for the third term, ending in 1863. He died July 29, 1856, in Nacogdoches, Texas.
