Ruggles, George David

soldier, was born Sept. 11, 1833, in Newburgh, N. Y. In 1855 he graduated from West Point; and served on the frontier and in the territories until 1861. During the civil war he served with Patterson in 1861; in charge of the organization of the volunteer army in 1861-62; chief of staff under Pope in 1862; and with Secretary Stanton in 1863. During 1863- 64 he was in the conscription bureau and inspection; and in 1865 was adjutantgeneral army of the Potomac under Meade. During 1868-76 he was in the department of the Platte; and during the next four years was in the department of the Dakota. He won many brevets for bravery and meritorious services; attained the rank of adjutant-general of the army; and was retired in 1896.
