Robeson, George Maxwell

soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born in 1827 in Warren county, N. J. In 1859 he was appointed prosecuting attorney for Camden county. On the outbreak of the rebellion was appointed a brigadier-general, and took an active part in the organization of troops. In 1867 he was appointed attorney-general of New Jersey, which position he resigned to accept a seat, in 1869, in the cabinet of President Grant, as secretary of the navy. He remained in the cabinet until the advent of President Hayes in 1877; and was elected a representative from New Jersey to the forty-sixth and forty-seventh congresses as a republican.
