Roberts, Benjamin Stone
soldier, was born in 1811 in Manchester, Vt.
In 1835 he graduated from West Point; and practiced law in Iowa in 1843-46. He then re-entered the army; served with distinction in the Mexican and civil wars; and attained the rank of major general. After two years as professor of tactics at Yale college, he retired from active service in 1870; and then undertook the manufacture and sale of a rifle of his own invention. He died Jan. 29, 1875, in Washington, D. C.
