Read, George
signer of declaration of independence, was born Sept. 17, 1733, in Cecil county, Md. He was made attorney-general of the three lower counties on the Delaware in 1763, and held the office until he was chosen a delegate to congress in 1775. In 1776 he was a signer of the declaration of independence. He was elected a member of the United States senate, serving from 1789 to 1793; and was then appointed chief justice of the supreme court of Delaware, in which office he remained until his death in 1798.
He died Sept. 21, 1798.
