Putnam, Frederic Ward

curator, was born April 16, 1839, in Salem, Mass., a direct descendant of John Putnam, one of the earliest settlers of Salem. He has for many years been professor of archæology and ethnology in the Harvard university; curator of the Peabody museum, and curator of anthropology in the American Museum of Natural History in New York city. During the past thirty-three years he has been engaged in exploration and in directing the explorations of his students and assistants, in North, Central and South America. He is the author of over three hundred scientific papers. He received the degree of master of arts from Williams college, and the degree of doctor of science from the university of Pennsylvania.
