Pearce, James Alfred

lawyer, educator, legislator, congressman, United States senator, was born Dec. 14, 1805, in Alexandria, Va. He was a member of the Maryland legislature in 1831. He was a representative in congress from that state from 1835 to 1839, and from 1841 to 1843.

He was a senator in congress from 1843 to 1862. He held the post of professor of law in Washington college, of Chestertown, and was a regent of the Smithsonian institution. He was re-elected to the senate for the term commencing March, 1863. He died Dec. 20, 1862, in Chestertown, Md.
