Peabody, George
banker, philanthropist, was born Feb. 18, 1795, in Danvers, Mass. He is said to have given more than $2,000,000 to the founding of colleges, schools and scientific institutions, and $300,000 for the benefit of the working classes of London. He established Yale college of New Haven, Conn.; assisted Peabody Museum of Natural History, and the Peabody museum and professorship of American archæology and ethnology in connection with the Harvard university, by a donation of $150,000 for each. He died Nov. 4, 1869, in London, England.
