Palmer, John Mcauley

soldier, lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born Sept. 13, 1817, in Scott county, Ky.

In 1843 he was elected probate judge of Macoupin county, Ill.; in 1847 was elected a member of the convention to amend the state constitution; in 1848 was re-elected probate judge, and in November of the same year was elected county judge, which office he held until 1852, when he was elected to the state senate to fill a vacancy; and was elected again in 1854.

In 1859 he was a candidate for congress..

In 1861 he was elected colonel of the fourteenth regiment of Illinois infantry; was promoted to brigadier-general of volunteers; and was promoted to major-general of volunteers. He removed to Springfield in 1867; and was elected governor of Illinois in 1868. In 1890 he was elected United States senator.
