author, poet, was born Dec. 9, 1773, in Taunton, Mass.

He was once a noted poet of Boston whose spiritea song, Adams and Liberty, has preserved his memory. He gave up his profession of law for literary pursuits, and received large sums for his poems, among which are, The Invention of Letters, and The Ruling Passion. His work was stilted and conventional, with the exception of the song named above. His collected Verse and Prose, edited by Prentiss, appeared in 1812. He died Nov. 13, 1811., in Boston, Mass.
