Orr, James Lawrence

lawyer, state legislator, congressman, governor, was born May 18, 1822, in Craytonville, S. C. In 1844 he was elected to the state legislature, and was re-elected in 1845. In 1848 he was elected a representative in congress from South Carolina, to which position he was subsequently re-elected, and on the assembling of the thirty-fifth congress was elected speaker. In 1860 he was appointed one of the commissioners to visit Washington in behalf of South Carolina, and in 1865 was elected governor of South Carolina. He was subsequently appointed minister to Russia. He died May 5, 1873, in St. Petersburg, Russia.
