Oliver, James
inventor, was born Aug. 28, 1823, in Scotland. He moved to South Bend in 1855 and began to manufacture plows. He met with some losses, much hard work, and many discouragements, but finally invented the chilled plow, which has since made his fortune.
The little old shop of 1855 has now béen succeeded by a plant owned by the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, covering fifty-eight acres, twenty-five of them under roof, and the Oliver chilled plows are sold in every part of the world.
