Niles, John Milton
lawyer, jurist, United States senator, author, was born Aug. 20, 1787, in Windsor, Conn. He was made a senator in congress in 1835, in which position he remained until 1839. In 1840 he was appointed postmaster-general, and in 1842 was again elected to the United States senate, serving six years. He edited a Gazetteer of Connecticut and Rhode Island; and wrote a History of South America; The Civil War; and several biographical works. He died May 31, 1856, in Hartford, Conn.
